--
** NEW
EDUCATIONAL COURSE **
The Preschool
Fundamentals course is comprised of two parts.
Part 1, Preschool Fundamentals: Theory, is an online course that will
focus on the theory and concepts of preschool education.
Part 2, Preschool Fundamentals: Hand on Training (HOT), is a live course
that focuses on the practical application of the concepts learned in
Part 1.
Course Objectives
The Preschool
Fundamentals course has been developed to:
-
Enhance the
status of recreational gymnastics programs throughout the United
States.
-
Establish
requirements for certification which will help identify competent
preschool and recreational gymnastics teachers.
-
Provide
appropriate information for preschool and recreational gymnastics
teachers.
-
Help standardize
recreational gymnastics teaching throughout the United States.
-
Provide
resources, instructional materials, and assistance at all levels of
teaching.
This course is
focused on teaching gymnastics movement education to preschool children
(ages 1-5).
The Preschool Fundamental Course is a core requirement for the
Recreational College within USA Gymnastics University. It can be used as
an elective for any of the other colleges within the University.
Part 1 - Preschool
Fundamentals: Theory
This course is a
must have for preschool instructors and teachers. Part 1 covers young
child development theory in the context of gymnastics movement
education. Course topics include teaching philosophy, stages of child
development, characteristics of a good teacher, class management, safety
considerations, skill deconstruction, lesson planning, and program
assessment. This course will help instructors better understand their
students and better prepare, organize, and run safe and successful
preschool classes. It provides a foundation of knowledge for all
preschool educators.
Part 1 is offered solely online. The course will take approximately four
hours to complete. Participants will have access to the course for 30
days after registration and may access the course as often as they wish
during that period. The course is comprised of five modules or sections.
At the end of each module, participants will be required to take an
exam. Users must pass the exam at 80% or better and have an unlimited
number of tries to pass the exam. The exam must be passed before moving
to the next module. There will not be a comprehensive exam at the end.
It is strongly recommended to complete Part 1 prior to taking Part 2 of
the Preschool Fundamentals course, but this is not a requirement. The
cost for the online course is $50 for professional, junior professional,
instructor, and athlete members. Online course fees are non-refundable
and cannot be transferred to another individual.

participants will be able to print a Part 1 certificate of completion at
the conclusion of the online course.
Part 2 - Preschool
Fundamentals: Hands on Training
This is a live,
hands-on training course designed for preschool instructors and
teachers. Part 2 course topics include fundamental movement for
children, class safety overview, games, activities to avoid,
manipulatives, lesson planning, inclusion of music, thematic teaching,
parent/child teaching, and the use of apparatus. This is a great hands
on follow-up to the theory course, with course instructors demonstrating
practical examples of many of the concepts taught in Part 1.
Part 2 is offered as a live course only. The course is scheduled for
four hours and will provide a great deal of hands-on instruction for
participants. Participants will be challenged with activities during the
course. This part of the course does not include an exam. The cost for
the live course is $65 for professional, junior professional, instructor
or athlete members; $115 for nonmembers (the nonmember rate includes a
one year instructor membership with USA Gymnastics). The minimum age for
course participation is 15. At the conclusion of the live course,
participants will be given a Part 2 certificate of completion.
