The Importance of Fine Motor Skill Development in Young Children
"Fine Motor Skills" are defined as the ability to use the small
muscles that control the movements of fingers, hands, and
wrists. Children develop large motor skills first, then the
extremities are coordinated. For academic purposes, children
need to learn how to properly use writing tools and scissors.
For life skills, children have to learn to button, snap, zip,
lace, and throw and catch objects. In gymnastics fine motor
skills are necessary for grip strength on bars, wrist strength,
graceful hands, and finger control. In order to develop
effective fine motor skills, a child must also develop the
ability to integrate and coordinate visual information (eye-hand
coordination).
Providing opportunities for young children to experience these
types of activities is easy in a gymnastics class. While the
teacher is spotting gymnastics skills, waiting stations can be
created to include, throwing and catching, stacking blocks,
squeezing squishy balls, rolling up a parachute or beach towel
with their hands. There are many ways to add variety and fun.
Keeping children busy eliminates standing in line and possible
behavior issues. |
